Hiking again!

Mike and I decided to start hiking again after a hiatus of several years. What motivated us? A friend introduced us to "phytoncides" which are organic compounds trees such as oak, pine trees give off. Apparently, they are known for having anti-cancer effects. So, we decided to add weekly hiking to our new cancer-fighting lifestyle.

We chose the Peter's Creek & Long Ridge Loop of 4.6 miles with low elevation change (~400 feet) to ease into our weekly hiking rituals. The trail has a good mix of green forests and yellow grasslands. We enjoyed hiking in and out of shady forests and open sunny meadows. Though at the same time, we were quite puzzled by the fact that two such different vegetations exist side by side. The view at the top of the ridge was AMAZING! Since this was the first hike after my chemotherapy, I had to go at a much slower pace with frequent breaks. But, Mike being the best husband there is, was very patient and encouraging throughout the hike. He even acted as my insect repellent! The bugs swarmed around Mike who sweated much more than me :P Apparently, bugs are drawn to heat... The trail was also very quiet and with very few people. It almost felt like we rented the whole forest just for the two of us! Our lovely hike ended with having our favorite meals and dessert (Triple Berry ShortCake) at the Palo Alto Nordstrom Cafe.

Here are some photos of the hike (Saturday, September 28, 2013)
