Hiking No. 6 Portola Redwood State Park

Hiking No. 6 on Nov. 2

Given last week's no cash for parking episode, we decided to purchase a couple of county and state park annual memberships.

Portola Redwood State Park provided us with a blissful experience admiring the Old Giant redwood tree, several redwood Goosepens, and a visual symphony of light and trees --redwoods, ferns, Douglas firs, tan oaks, hemlock. What are GoosepensThey are wide open holes hollowed out (usually by fire) at the base of some redwoods. Some are large enough for people to walk in. Apparently, some early settlers in the coastal redwood areas could keep geese or other livestock in these hollows, thus giving them their name.

The highlight was no doubt meeting face to face (more like face to foot :P) with the old giant tree. In front of its ginormous size and majestic presence, we had no choice but to be humbled and awe-inspired. Towering over us with its burnt black scars all over its body, the old giant tree clearly demonstrated / manifested the lifeforce within itself. The encounter with two deer upon our driving away from the Park was a nice bonus. They really gazed at us for a few minutes as we were staring at them.
