We made a mistake of parking near the campground instead of the redwood grove trail entrance. After pretty much circling around the whole campground, we found our way back to the hiking trail quickly leading us to the observation deck which stands at the highest elevation of the Park. When we climbed the stairs of the deck, it offered us a nice view of the Monterey Bay.
From there, we hiked down the sandy trail full of silvery manzanitas, chaparral, and other native plants. It almost felt like walking along the beach just minus the ocean and flipflops. Apparently, the sandy soil is remnants of an ancient ocean floor few million years ago. Then, the sandy trail suddenly changes from a sunny, exposed ridge into a shady, dense pine forest. What a drastic change of scenery! We met a couple of joggers (including the first time meeting a female hiker in five fingers) and several horseback riders along the way. One down side for us was to juggle our steps around the organic fertilizers our dear horse friends left along the way for some parts of the trail.
